There are cover shoots, and then there is this. Vogue India's April 2026 issue features Deepika Padukone in what the magazine's editor-in-chief describes as 'the most technically and artistically demanding editorial we have ever produced' — 18 photographs that took six days, three locations and a crew of 47 to realise.

Shot at the Gateway of India at dawn, the abandoned textile mills of Parel in the afternoon, and the rooftop of a Bandra heritage building at twilight, the images frame Deepika against Mumbai itself — the city that launched her, that she left, and that she returns to now as one of the most recognised faces on earth.

The styling, handled by a team that flew in from Paris for the occasion, layers Indian craftsmanship with contemporary silhouettes in a way that feels neither forced nor nostalgic. A hand-woven Banarasi silk jacket worn over a structured carbon-black blazer became the image that fashion editors globally shared within hours of the issue dropping.

What the photographs do not tell you — but what was visible on set — is the physical precision Deepika brings to each frame. Every pose, every angle of light on her face, is negotiated with the photographer in real time with the vocabulary of someone who has spent two decades understanding exactly how she exists in an image.

These 18 photographs are available in full in the April 2026 issue of Vogue India, on newsstands now.
