Neeraj Chopra made history at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China on Sunday, throwing a spectacular 90.14 metres to claim gold — the first Indian to win two consecutive World Athletics titles and the first to throw 90 metres at an indoor championship.

Chopra's winning throw came in the fourth round after he had led from the first attempt with 88.12m. His sixth-round throw of 90.14m was the nail in the coffin, eclipsing Germany's Julian Weber (88.94m) and Czech Republic's Jakub Vadlejch (87.82m) who took silver and bronze.

The 28-year-old from Panipat, Haryana, celebrated by kneeling and kissing the track before his coaches and the Indian team engulfed him in a group embrace. Prime Minister Modi congratulated Chopra on X, calling it "a golden moment that has made every Indian proud."

"Ninety metres at an indoor championship is something I have always wanted to do," Chopra told reporters at the post-event press conference. "I had some pain in my shoulder last month but I trusted the process and my team, and today everything came together perfectly."

The throw is the fourth-best outdoor-equivalent performance of Chopra's career and reinforces his position as the world's dominant javelin thrower heading into the Paris Diamond League circuit and the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Chopra's 2026 season has now begun in electric fashion after he won a Diamond League event in Doha in February. He is on track to defend his Commonwealth Games title in Glasgow in July and is already the heavy favourite for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
