India completed a famous series victory in Australia on Sunday, beating the hosts by 6 wickets at the Sydney Cricket Ground to seal the Test series 3-1 — only the fourth time India have won a Test series on Australian soil and the most comprehensive of all.
Captain Rohit Sharma was the architect of the chase, playing one of his finest innings in Test cricket. Coming in at number 3 with the score at 34-1, Rohit took the attack to the Australian bowling, hitting 14 boundaries and 4 sixes in his 118 off 110 balls before being caught at deep mid-wicket off Pat Cummins.
Jasprit Bumrah, who had taken 7 wickets across the two innings, was named Player of the Match and Player of the Series, finishing with 32 wickets in the 5 Tests at an average of 14.62 — the best series performance by any bowler in Australia in the last 25 years.
The victory was particularly sweet for Indian cricket given the team had won here in 2018-19 and 2020-21 — but this 3-1 margin is the most emphatic. Australia had won the previous two series in India, making this an emphatic reversal on home turf.
"This is arguably the best series win in Indian Test history," said former captain Sourav Ganguly on commentary. "To come here, in these conditions, and win 3-1 with a young batting lineup is extraordinary. Rohit has led brilliantly."
India will return home to preparations for the home Test series against South Africa in July, but this victory will live in Indian cricket folklore for decades.
