India clinched the Test series against Australia 3-1 in Sydney on Monday in a match of dramatic twists, as captain Rohit Sharma struck a majestic 118 off 110 balls in the fourth innings to guide India to a target of 298 with 5 wickets and 12 overs to spare. It is only the second time India has won a Test series in Australia 3-1 or better.

Rohit's innings, described by commentators as one of the best ever played in a fourth-innings chase in Australia, included 14 fours and 5 sixes. He shared a crucial 167-run stand with Shubman Gill (72) that broke the back of the Australian bowling attack. Jasprit Bumrah, who took 7 wickets in the match, was named Player of the Match.

Bumrah's figures of 7-98 across the two innings brought his series tally to 28 wickets — the highest by any bowler in a single Test series in Australia in 70 years. He was named Player of the Series for his dominant display across all four Tests. 'He is the best fast bowler in the world, no question,' Australia captain Pat Cummins said.

The win gives India 6 World Test Championship points and a significant boost in the race for the WTC Final at Lord's in June 2026. India now needs to win one of their remaining two home Tests against Sri Lanka to qualify for the Final. Australia are mathematically still in contention but need help from other results.

Crowds of 42,000 packed the SCG for the final day, with a large contingent of Indian supporters celebrating well into the evening. The Board of Control for Cricket in India announced a Rs 5 crore bonus for the squad. Rohit called it 'the most satisfying overseas series win of my career.'
