Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated the new All India Institute of Medical Sciences campus in Patna, Bihar, calling it a "landmark moment in India's healthcare revolution." The Rs 1,800 crore facility, built under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana, will serve over five crore people across Bihar, Jharkhand and eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Prime Minister announced that all patients from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families would receive free treatment at the new campus, including surgeries, diagnostics and medicines. He also laid the foundation stone for a new 500-bed trauma center, which is expected to be operational by December 2027.
The new AIIMS Patna campus spans 150 acres and includes 22 super-speciality departments, 960 beds, a dedicated cancer care block and a telemedicine hub that will connect rural primary health centres across Bihar to specialists in real time. The institute will also admit 125 MBBS students and 60 nursing students annually.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who attended the inauguration, said the new AIIMS would "end the need for patients to travel to Delhi or Mumbai for treatment." He announced that the state government would provide free bus service from all district headquarters to the AIIMS campus.
Union Health Minister JP Nadda said six more AIIMS campuses across India would be made fully operational by March 2027, taking the total to 22. He added that the government had already sanctioned 10,000 new MBBS seats across AIIMS and medical colleges established under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana since 2014.
